WBC Champions Wow Footie fans at MK Dons (1)
WBC in conjunction with MK Dons F.C. together with the local Fire Service, Police and Heart FM arranged a Family Fun Day prior to MK Dons vs. Gillingham game. Glenn Catley Former WBC Champion and Jane Couch the UK’s first female Champion took 100′s of boys and girls on the pads in the ring, providing a lot of fun and a taste of the sport.
The Champions including WBC Heavy Weight Champion, ‘Terrible’ Tim Witherpsoon, had photo’s with the fans and signed autographs all afternoon for the Crowd of 12,000+. The Champions were given a rapturous standing ovation when they were presented to the crowd on the pitch at half time. Tim Witherspoon was given the honour of starting the Mascot race which he did in his own inimitable style and flair to the amusement of all.
The day was aimed at encouraging children into sport with and football and boxing working together to inspire them into making positive decisions in there life. Peter Winkleman the Chairman of MK Dons F.C. thanked the WBCares (World Boxing Cares) UK committee members for arranging the most popular entertainment at the fun day. He also thanked the WBC and Jose Sulaiman for making such a great event happen and looks forward to other WBC events. In Particular the Belt Presentation Dinner at the Stadium on 29th November where a whole host of champions will be there to witness Tim and Leon Spinks presented with their Championship belts. Not only will this prestigious event celebrate the achievements of the WBC Champions but will raise much needed funds for WBCares and its partner in the UK HRH Prince Charles’ Princes Trust Charity. Both Charities help disadvantaged youth make the most of there potential and their lives.
Tim Witherspoon said “You don’t always see eye to eye with everyone in boxing when your fighting and things didn’t always happen in my career they way I wanted them to go but I am proud of my achievements. I see with my own eyes the good work the WBC does over here in the UK and it makes me very proud to be one of their Champions and a member of the WBC family. The WBC is truly Global, the real deal. I am really looking forward to being with Leon on November 29th for our Belt Presentation and look forward to seeing the people of Milton Keynes who I know will come out and support such a prestigious event and really get behind the charities to help the young people. Its going to be great to see all the people and all the other Champions on the night. I am happy and in a good place right now and looking to pass on my experience and knowledge to young people, to inspire them to make the most of the lives. My son is an undefeated pro lightweight Terrible Tim II, I am focused on getting him to the top and getting that beautiful Green and Gold WBC belt around his waist when his time is right. Then he knows he’s the Champ just like his Dad, he said with that famous big smile.”
Glenn Catley Former WBC Champion. “What a wonderful day, Jane and I had hundreds of kids in the ring on the pads and they loved every minute of it, none of them have boxed before and they really through themselves into it. We had a great deal of fun as well its great to see young people so happy and I was overwhelmed with the great reception the people of Milton Keynes and MK Dons gave us, I can’t wait for the 29th November now, great people great venue. I am very Proud that Jose Sulaiman through the WBCares program invited me to this event to help the kids. I have spent lots of time supporting different charities but it is very nice indeed to be a part of the WBC team.”
Jane Couch. “I really enjoyed it and can’t thank the WBC and MK Dons enough. I knew Jill Diamond (WBCares President) did loads of good work in the USA, Mexico and other places but no idea that the WBC were so active in the UK. I will definitely start helping the WBC with other projects in the UK. It is vitally important that we encourage girls and boys equally into all sports. It is clear from today that the MK Dons and the WBC feel the same. There were lots of happy faces today a real treat for the kids, days like this make a big difference. I feel we have a responsibility to help the youth and disadvantaged, it was great to two great teams (MK Dons and WBC) make such a direct connection with the local community.
WBcares UK Committee members David Walker, Mervyn Turner, John Murphy and Mick Lowe worked very hard and so did the volunteer boxers from Luton Shamrock Boxing Club. All credit to them and the WBC, a good day all round.
