WBC number 11 super bantamweight Balweg “Hitman” Bangoyan (15-0, 7 KOs) and WBC No. 9 super flyweight Sylvester “Stallone” Lopez (12-2-1, 8 KOs) help each other to improve their game by sparring since last week.
Bangoyan goes three times a week to Lopez’s training camp, the Elorde Gym in Sucat, Paranaque City to spar in 10-round a day.
As of Thursday, Bangoyan sparred a total of 135 rounds, including against former Philippine Boxing Federation super bantamweight champion Sonny Gonzales and unbeaten 8-rounder super bantam Rene Bistudio at the Tiger City Gym in Mandaluyong City.
Bangoyan is preparing for his scheduled first title defense of his WBC International super bantamweight title on March 2 at the Don Mariano Track and Field Open Arena in Digos City, in southern Philippines in anticipated crowd of around 50,000 people.
Bangoyan, who has 47% KO percentage, takes on challenger Jong-Won Won, orthodox from Bucheon in South Korea.
The fight on March 2nd will coincide with the birthday of Davao del sur Vice Governor Simplico “Fely” Latasa who assured the entry to fight shall be free of charge.
Latasa described Bangoyan as “one of the brightest Filipino prospects in years to hold a world championship” and a future champion of the people.
Lopez is preparing for his next ring appearance, possibly a title defense of his WBC International super flyweight belt, on April 24 in Manila.
Promoter Gabriel “Bebot” Elorde Jr has on-going negotiations to bring a Mexican challenger for Lopez, who like Bangoyan was born 1987 in Mindanao islands in southern Philippines.
“Lopez is a world class fighter, he can punch and can take punches from heavier guy like me,” said Bangoyan. “I have learned so many techniques from him that’s why I’m thankful of having him as my sparmate.”
