NONITO “Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. has announced his intention to take home to the Philippines the WBC super flyweight title from reigning champion and his previous victim Vic Darchinyan.
Fresh from a devastating third round knockout win over Mexican Manuel “Chango” Vargas in Las Vegas last Saturday, WBA interim super flyweight champion Donaire arrived Friday morning in Manila from Las Vegas.
Donaire said he wants to dethrone the WBC-WBA super fly king Darchinyan, especially the demand for their return bout is very high.
In July 2007, Donaire registered one of the most devastating stoppaged in history of boxing when he caught Darchinyan with a countering left hook in the fifth round to steal his IBF-IBO flyweight titles.
But Donaire made it clear that if the Australia-based Armenian refuses to fight with in the year, he will move up in weight to challenge WBO bantamweight king Fernando Montiel of Los Mochis, Mexico.
The Filipino said he could not wait for another year for Darchinyan, who is also eager to avenge his shameful defeat to Donaire.
“They said that I have to beg first before they will agree to a rematch. But I have defeated him,” Donaire said. “I (would) rather face a champion (Montie) who respects me and who I respect as well.
“How can I beg him (Darchinyan) for a rematch when I was the one who knocked him out? It’s been a long time, I’ve been waiting for a rematch for a long time now but I’d rather choose a champion who respects me and I respect in return,” Donaire added. “I have no time for games.”
