From Jamie Parry and Kevin Hayde: Good luck Del Boy

Published on Wed, 15/02/12 | BoxingUk

This Saturday the boxing enigma that is Dereck ‘Del Boy’ Chisora will be taking on undoubtedly the toughest challenge of his career in facing Ukrainian giant and heavyweight ruler Vitali Klitschko. The fight takes place in Manheim, Germany in what is expected to be another sell out performance by a Klitschko. The general consensus amongst boxing fans and experts alike is that Chisora will be brave but ultimately the WBC champion will retain his title via knock out…

However there is something about this fight that has got me unduly curious. ‘Del Boy’ isn’t like most other heavyweights or fighters for that matter, he carries a light hearted yet mysterious demeanour around him. His antics of driving one of the original robin reliant cars from ‘Only fools and horses’ to a media day in which he greeted Klitschko seemed to generally amuse him as opposed being another predictable sales gimmick as we see so much these days. When he is interviewed on camera it is evident that he isn’t really interested in what the interviewer has to ask and this makes him different form the money lovers in the game and the media hogs. There are occasions when he takes a similar disinterest in an opponent as we saw in his poor performance against Tyson Fury, he is a fighter that needs to be challenged. By his own admission he loves to fight and who better to get him motivated that arguably the best heavyweight of the last decade ? Since the fight was announce he has trained hard, losing the love handles, a usual sign that laziness has crept in,  and is convinced that he will win in eight rounds. Normally one would put this down to the usual braggadocious  behaviour that most fighters have been trying to emulate since Ali. Dereck Chisora however is no Audley Harrison, we will see no outrageous bear bating followed by a timid performance, every time he steps in that ring Chisora comes to fight. With regards to fighting one of the most intimidating men on the planet both Chisora and his trainer Don Charles insist that it is no joke. ” If you fight the name Klitschko you will lose, when Dereck steps in that ring he will be fighting a six feet six man that is all.” Says Charles, who also goes on to say that this could be one of Chisora’s easiest fights to date. That I think is pushing it a bit too far but as the saying goes, “styles make fights” and if Chisora can breach the Klitschko jab then Vitali will be facing his most dangerous live opponent since Lennox Lewis (and we all know what happened there!).

Best of luck Del Boy, leave it all in the ring and bring home that WBC belt!
