MORE than a decade ago, then skinny and little-known Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr fractured the little finger in his left hand from punching bag at Ten Goosen Boxing Gym in Van Nuys, California.

This injury was able to heal, but re-injured when the soldier turned boxing trainer Nonito “Dodong” Donaire Sr brought back his young boxers, Nonito and Glenn Donaire to the Philippines in 2001 to fight.

The gusty and quick-punching Donaire Jr’s little finger was shown to a doctor in Paranaque Medical Center, south of Manila, after he broked it again during an ill-advised sparring against a bigger young upstart at the Elorde Gym of Gabriel “Bebot” Elorde at St. Rita Village in Sucat, Paranaque City.

“His little finger actually broke and dislocated,” Donaire Sr. said in Tagalog. “Doctor put splint in it, but he (my son) untimely removed it, so it crouches a bit.

“But the good thing, according to the doctor, his finger had turned out much stronger because of callus. It’s totally healed,” added Senior, who nurtured his son’s career but since early 2009 up to present was estranged from him.

The son broke his ties with his father and isolated himself from his own family after the newly wed Donaire Jr’s flyweight title defense against South Africa’s Moruti Mthalane with TKO in round 6 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas due to misunderstandings with his charming wife Rachel.

Last Saturday, February 4, the grown up, popular and fourth pound-for-pound

This is former WBC bantamweight champion Nonito "Filipino Flash" Donaire's blooded and injured left knuckle after soundly beating Puerto Rican Wilfredo Vazquez Jr in a one-sided bout Saturday, February 4, 2012 in front of 14,000 fans at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. PHOTO FROM TEAM DONAIRE

fighter in the world Donaire Jr, 29, suffered another injury in his more powerful left hand during his bombardment at the face and head of Puerto Rico’s Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in San Antonio, Texas.

Donaire Jr (28-1, 18 KOs) hurt his knuckle, particularly in his index and middle fingers between second and fourth rounds. The injury did not stop the pride of the Philippines to dominate his garrulous opponent from Bayamon, just to let him eat his punches and that’s his way of making his fists do the talking.

After Donaire’s controversial majority decision win over 12 rounds was announced, the hard-hitting Filipino warrior showed the bloodied guaze of his left-hand wrap in the televised post-fight interview.

The decision was described as controversial, because of Texan Dr. Ruben Garcia’s unpopular 112-115 verdict in favor of the losing former champion Vazquez Jr.

Other judges, Don Trella and Levi Martinez showed their impartiality and proved that they watched the same one-sided fight when they tallied an identical 117-110 in their scorecards for Donaire. This writer also scored the fight 117-110 for the Filipino prizefighter.

“Junjun’s (Donaire Jr’s nickname) injury in Vazquez fight’s new,” said Senior.

DONAIRE SR. BELIEVES HIS SON CAN EASILY KNOCKOUT ARCE

Although he said that he had not spoken to his son, the Bay Area-based Donaire Sr. has the heart to let the public know about his thoughts should his namesake son faces Mexican star Jorge “Travieso” Arce.

He believed Arce (59-6-2, 45 KOs) has little chance to beat his estranged son.

Jorge Arce (left) and Nonito Donaire, two of only few bankable super bantamweights today, poses with their fists. They will continue the hot Filipino-Mexican rivalry in the boxing ring. PHOTO FROM TEAM DONAIRE

“Arce don’t defend well, that’s his difference compare with Vazquez,” Donaire Sr. figured out.

Without decent defense, Donaire Sr. thinks his son might easily find a way to get on target his one-punch knockout power, like what happened to Vic Darchinyan and another well-known Mexican champion Fernando Montiel.

“Arce is an all-out fighter, he wants to stay in front so if Junjun catched him, he might be knock out too,” Donaire Sr said. “He’s an easy target compare to Vazquez. Remember Arce was losing his fight when Vazquez ran out of stamina in the final round (of their bout last year).”

But Bob Arum had made an announcement.

“That will determine everything,” Arum said of Donaire’s hand, “but depending on the timing, we want him to face Arce next.”

Arce has one more hurdle in front of him before getting the crack at Donaire’s lofty P4P status. The 32-year old Mexican from Los Mochis takes on veteran Lorenzo Parra on Feb. 18 in Mexicali, Baja California.

Donaire is also hoping to challenge formidable champion Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan for the most coveted WBC bantamweight title.

Nishioka: Refused to comment when asked by suljosblog.com if he's interested to face Nonito Donaire Jr. during the 49th WBC Convention in Las Vegas last December. PHOTO BY AZN BADGER

Nishioka is a 35-year-old southpaw with decent record of 39-4-3, 24 KOs. He disposed Mexico’s Rafael Marquez (40-7, 36 KOs) in his last fight, winning via well deserved unanimous decision on Oct. 1 in Las Vegas.

Donaire said he’s eager to take any of them in the ring, whoever is interested. But he revealed, it needed at least two to three more months to heal his broken hand.

Arum has included the newly crowned WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (9-0, 7 KOs) in the mix, but Donaire Jr. is not that much interested.

Rigondeaux keeps on trying to get attention. He continuously called out on Donaire Jr. since the unbeaten 31-year old Cuban southpaw dethroned Rico Ramos with sixth round stoppage win on Jan. 20 at Las Vegas’ Palms Casino Resort.

NOTE: When Nonito Donaire Jr. went back home to the Philippines in 2001, he was known in boxing community as “Flash”, a monicker he got way back from school in San Leandro, California because he’s fast.
With primary intention of associating him with Filipinos and matched it with his older brother Glenn’s monicker, this boxingwriter put “Filipino” to make it “Filipino Flash” in Boxrec.com.

He’d used it ever since then in his boxing news reports, in the Philippine national newspaper as well as previous websites like Boxingtalk.com and Boxingscene.com, after they’ve met and became friends sometimes in 2002 at Elorde Gym in St. Rita Village in Sucat, Paranaque with his father, Nonito Sr, and Glenn, who at that time was known as “Filipino Bomber” with 5-1, 5 KOs record.

Yuba (40-7-2, 30 KOs), Japanese #2 and OPBF #5, beat top ranked and OPBF #3 rated talent Carlos Linares (9-2, 8KOs), younger brother of two-time world champion Jorge, by a devastating knockout at 0:39 into the seventh of the scheduled 10 rounds contest for the vacant Japanese title.

Yuba has earned the right to be called the first Japanese national champion in four weight classes in history.

“Even I cannot believe I won. Is this real?,” Yuba told the press in the dressing room after surviving the quite crowd-pleasing but fierce and mortal battle.

The youngster Linares dominated the early rounds of the fight with his extending and quick right straights and accurate left hooks.

Yuba, the former light, super-light, and welterweight champion in Japan, got a cut over his right eyebrow by a punch as early as the second round.

But the 6-foot southpaw was far from flinching, rather determined to counter his solid left to opponents’ sharp blows.

In such a breathtaking conflict, the more experienced contender knocked down the Venezuela-native with his left hook in the end of the 4th round.

In the 5th, Yuba was threatened by Linares’ right again, but in the following term he struck him off to the canvas with a combination.

Both fighters were obviously exhausted going to the seventh round. Linares, with a cut on the bridge of nose in the last round, made a last-ditch rush. Yuba took advantage of it and landed his left straight. Linares fell down, and this time, he could not stand up within 10 counts.

“It was not once that I was about to give up. Even I thought ‘please knock me out soon’ in the bout. I cannot believe this situation that I’m speaking to the press having this champion belt with me,” Yuba said.

“I am so proud of myself to win such a tough fight with very talented fighter. But I don’t want to do this ever again. It was too much.”

It was his third attempt to be the first national four-division champion. After he lost Japanese welterweight title in the third defense in

April 2008, he failed to break the stronghold of Charlie Ota to capture the Japanese and OPBF super-welterweight title in September 2010 and May 2011.

The dream of the pride of Miyakonojo, Miyazaki came true today but he already has another dream, to win the fifth one.

“My whole experiences, no matter of good or bitter, led me to the victory. I am so happy to show how experiences count. It’s not only in the ring. It works in anybody’s life.”

In the other main event of that night, former Japanese welterweight champion Daisuke Nakagawa (19-2-2, 15 KOs) captured the vacant Japanese super-welterweight title by TKO at 58 second in the 10th round over Japanese #3 rated Yosuke Kirima(14-2-2, 10 KOs).

A slow starter, Nakagawa paced up as the rounds went by and landed many of right crosses to damage Kirima, who stepped backward with jabbing.

Then the referee did not hesitate to stop counting when Kirima fell down to the canvas with Nakagawa’s accurate short left in the final round.

UNBEATEN Filipino super flyweight fighter Karlo Maquinto (8-0-1, 6 KOs) passed away while in comatose six days after his gutsy performance before a jampacked crowd at Recom Gym in Amparo Subdivision, Caloocan City, near Manila in the Philippines.

Maquinto, 21, died due to acute subdural hematoma at 10:15 a.m. on Friday (Thursday night in Mexico City) at the Intensive Care Unit of Far Eastern University-NRMF Hospital in Fairview, Quezon City.

KARLO MAQUINTO recorded 8-0-1, 6 KOs in his one year boxing career

The 5-foot-5 orthodox fighter went down twice from the equally fearless Mark Joseph Costa (4-4-1, 1 KO) in the second round but immediately got on his feet in those occasions and fought his way in keeping his unbeaten record after winning all his professional bouts last year. The verdict was majority draw.

After ring announcer Boy Villanera announced the two judges scored the fight with identical 75 draws while the third official had Costa winner by a point, 74-75, Maquinto embraced Costa and then collapsed.

The young native of Barangay Maribong in Lambunao, Iloilo province in Central Philippines was immediately brought to San Lorenzo General Hospital in Lagro then the FEU-NRMF.

Maquinto, without oxygen and neck-brace support, was conscious and responsive while in the ambulance but slowly slipped into a deep comatose state.

Attending physician Dr. Vic Chua declared the patient was in critical condition since the time of his arrival.

Aside from Chua, neurosurgeon Dr. Rhoby Orata, neurologist Dr. Grace De Guzman monitored closely Maquinto from Saturday night when he was accepted. But the clot and swelling in the brain forces them refrain from head operation.

The neurologist advised Maquinto’s situation from day one was inoperable condition and his brain will just pop out once they tried to drain the blood because of the pressure from the clot.

Maquinto’s mother Marjorie, brother Arnold and sister Vergie were there at his side when he died.

This is Karlo Maquinto after the bout

GERRY PENALOSA’S 13TH BOXING EVENT

The boxing show was the first for this year and 13th event overall under former WBC super flyweight champion Gerry Penalosa’s GerryPens Promotions since 2008.

Penalosa staged nine shows last year in the Visayas and Mindanao islands. It was just his third installations in Luzon after staging two boxfests in Mandaluyong City in his debut as promoter in 2008 and then 2010.

Maquinto dreamed to become a WBC world champion like his idol Manny Pacquiao, who took the gold and green title belts in flyweight, super featherweight, lightweight, junior middleweight and the first ever special WBC Diamond championship belt.

Under the guidance of his manager Anson Tiu Co and trainers Marvin Somodio and Jeff Linay, Maquinto trained at the the same gym Pacquiao usually kicks off his training, the Shape-Up Gym in the Cooyeesan Hotel Plaza in the high altitude Baguio City.

Maquinto made his debut at the age of 21 years in January 19 last year. He won his first four bouts inside three rounds, figured in back-to-back unanimous decision wins and ended the year with third and fifth round TKOs, respectively.

2ND CASUALTY IN 10 YEARS IN THE PHILIPPINES

Maquinto’s the first casualty in boxing-related death in the Philippines in 10 years since super bantamweight Manuel Zayas died with the same caused in 2002 in Paniqui, Tarlac. He was also 21-year old at that time.

Zayas’s final bout was a slam-bang affair with former Philippine champion Alex Escaner, until three devastating blows floored him. But, despite the rubbery legs, he was able to beat the 8-count.

The referee stopped the contest at that point and Zayas complained of dizziness and went into coma. He died five days later at the hospital.

Before Maquinto, the latest case of ring death of Filipino boxer happened in Bangkok, Thailand in 2007.

Fought without permission from the Philippine Games and Amusement Board (GAB), Lito Sisnorio (10-6-1, 3 KOs) was knockout in the fourth round by former WBC flyweight king Chatchai Sasakul (53-6) and died the following day at Bangkok’s Piyamin hospital.

Although Sisnorio briefly ruled the WBC Youth World flyweight title after beating Fahpetchnoi Sor Chitpattana with TKO in May 2006, prior to Sasakul’s bout, he faltered three fights in a row, including when he lost his title with unanimous decision and the fourth round TKO to WBC flyweight champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam in their non-title bout.

MANILA, Philippines – Super flyweight boxer Karlo Maquinto remained in a deep coma at the FEU-NRMF Medical Center in West Fairview, Quezon City, Saturday, Jan. 30, with his condition inoperable as he suffered a massive subdural hematoma causing pressure from the blood clot to push the left side of his brain to the right after a brutal eight-round bout that ended in a majority draw.

Maquinto, 21, was dropped twice in the second round by Benguet’s Mark Joseph Costa in their hotly-contested battle at the Amparo Village, Caloocan, last Saturday night. He got up to nearly deck Costa twice in the same round and went on to

MAQUINTO: Remains in coma after his fight ended in a majority draw in the Philippines.

dominate the next four stanzas. The crowd, that included promoter Gerry Peñalosa and Caloocan City Mayor Enrico Echeverri, applauded both fighters for their outstanding performance at the end of the fight.

Judges Sammy Bernabe and Noel Haduca had it 75-all while judge Virgilio Garcia, 75-74, for Costa. The three judges scored the second round 10-7 for Costa because of the two knockdowns. After the decision was announced, Maquinto’s knees buckled and he collapsed walking back to his corner. The stricken fighter was carried out on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance and rushed to the San Lazaro Hospital in Lagro before he was brought to FEU-NRMF under the care of neurosurgeon Dr. Rhoby Orata. He was accompanied to the hospital by his manager Anson Tiu Co, co-owner and manager of the Shape-Up Gym in the Cooyeesan Hotel Plaza in Baguio City, and Games and Amusements Board (GAB) ring physician Dr. Redentor Viernes.

Even as an ambulance was on stand-by, there was no provision for oxygen, a neck brace and a slantboard. Maquinto was not immobilized when he was clumsily dragged from the ring onto the stretcher. Dr. Viernes and Dr. Mae Banes were assigned by the GAB as ringside physicians for the fight card.

Maquinto’s mother Marjorie and brother Arnold flew in from Iloilo last Sunday to be at the fighter’s side. His sister Virgie, a caregiver in Quezon City, paid P7,000 for their one-way plane tickets. Tiu Co said he will take care of Maquinto’s hospital expenses. Maquinto was brought to the Intensive Care Unit late last Sunday but returned to a private room yesterday afternoon with life-support apparatus sustaining a blood pressure of 100 over 70.

In the ambulance, Maquinto displayed signs of consciousness, moving his hands and blinking his eyes. But he eventually lapsed into a coma. A CT-Scan showed blood enveloping his brain with a clot pushing the left side to the right, creating a dangerous life-threatening imbalance.

“There was a shifting of the dark matter in the brain,” said Tiu Co who manages four fighters. “The brain is supposed to be balanced on both sides but in Karlo’s case, it’s now one-sided. We’re hoping for a miracle. Doctors are against opening up Karlo to drain the blood because of his unstable condition. The decision is not to perform surgery at the moment. This is a big tragedy and right now, I’m reevaluating our situation with regard to managing a boxing stable. Karlo was a promising fighter. No one expected something like this to happen.”

Maquinto started boxing as an elementary student. He was brought to Baguio by amateur coach Boy Catolico, who is also from Iloilo. The Shape-Up Gym has become popular among fighters because it’s where Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire train in Baguio. Maquinto turned pro last April and has compiled a 6-0-1 record, with four KOs. Last November, he came back from a knockdown in the first round to halt Zoren Pama in three in Rosario, Cavite. Maquinto is known for his fighting heart and showed it last Saturday.

The fifth of six children, Maquinto wasn’t in the original lineup of fighters for Saturday’s event. Peñalosa said he was only an insert. “Karlo’s manager wanted to keep him active and told me I didn’t have to pay a purse,” said Peñalosa. Maquinto would’ve been paid P8,000 for the eight-round bout.

“We’re waiting for Karlo to wake up,” said Virgie. “Whatever happens, we’ll bring Karlo back to Iloilo. We are prepared for the worst as we’ve been told Karlo can go anytime.”

A noted neurologist said if Maquinto is in a Glasgow Three coma state, it is an inoperable situation. “In such a situation, the brain will just pop out once you open his skull,” said the neurologist. “It’s possible that the patient may have burst an artery during the fight or suffered a seizure. It’s also possible that at 21, there could’ve been a congenital problem causing a blood artery to rupture. The critical period is 72 hours from the incident. A brain wave test would show activity or not. If there is an attempt to elevate his blood pressure with medication, it’s not sure if that will mean an improvement in his condition. Surgery at this point may result in death or even if he survives, he will be in a vegetative state. If his blood pressure continues to drop, it may lead to a breakdown of bodily functions.”

Maquinto’s father Felicibar is a farmer from Lambunao, Iloilo. Of his three sons, only Karlo turned to boxing. Two of his six children are still in school. “Karlo always wanted to be a boxer from when he was a little boy,” said Virgie. “It was his dream to become a champion.”

SIXTH ranked Milan Melindo will not put his WBC Youth Intercontinental title. Instead, he gives priority to risk his version of Intercontinental title in little-known WBO tonight in Cebu City, Philippines.

The WBO allowed a Mexican challenger Juan “Panterita” Esquer (27-9-2, 21 KOs) of Navojoa, Sonora despite coming off in two loses in his last three fights at the Watefront Hotel and Casino.

Melindo (25-0, 9 KOs) captured the WBC Youth Intercontinental flyweight title with unanimous decision win over 10 rounds against inexperienced American champ Anthony “Baby Assassin” Villarreal at the stated hotel two years ago.

Milendo captured the vacant title in WBO in his latest fight when he disposed Francisco “Chiquita” Rosas. The native of Ciudad Neza retired in the 10th of scheduled 12 round contest.
