Mexican boxer, Fernando “Ko-chulito” Montiel became the WBC Bantamweight world champion by defeating former champion Hozumi Hasegawa by knockout in 4 rounds. Hazegawa was making his eleventh defense of the title before thousands of fans in a sold out arena, and through his speed and combinations had totally dominated the bout, however in the fourth round, Montiel landed a very hard right punch with which the actions ended.
Since he was a child, Montiel had dreamed of winning the green and gold belt, and today he showed great jubilation about having made his dream come true.
Even though Hazegawa lost, Japanese promoter Akihiko Honda staged a great card.
