May 11th, 2009 – Mexico City.

TOSHIAKI NISHIOKA VS. JHONNY GONZALEZ
IN MONTERREY, MEXICO, MAY 23rd, 2009.

Toshiaki Nishioka, the WBC Super-Bantamweight champion from Japan, will be arriving in Monterrey, Mexico, on Monday, May 18th, to defend his WBC championship against mandatory contender and former world champion Jhonny Gonzalez.

Nishioka has been praised by the World Boxing Council, especially president Jose Sulaiman, for his professionalism and exemplary commitment during these difficult times that have made many countries and corporations make humiliating and drastic decisions that are hurting the world of sports, especially in Mexico.

Nishioka will arrive in Monterrey convinced that he will retain his super bantamweight championship and show the world that Mexico is no different from any other country.

The ring officials for this bout have been confirmed:

Referee: Kenny Bayless, Las Vegas, USA.

Judges: Gale Van Hoy, Texas, USA;

David Sutherland, Oklahoma, USA, and

Nathan Palmer, Indiana, USA.

Supervisor: Joe Dwyer from the USA.

On this same card, former champion Rafael Marquez will make his comeback after the three memorable fights against Israel Vazquez.

Juanito Rubillar, along with his team, arrived in Cancun today to prepare for his final elimination bout in the Light-Flyweight division against former champion Omar Niño.

This other fight card – “Mayan Challenge at X-caret” – will take place in Cancun, Mexico on June 6th, 2009, and will be the first boxing event ever held at the ruins of the Mayan Empire.

CONFIRMADA NISHIOKA – GONZALEZ

PARA MAYO 23 EN MONTERREY

El Presidente del Consejo Mundial De Boxeo, José Sulaimán, informa que tuvo hoy una conferencia telefónica con el señor Reginaldo Kuchle para confirmar el 23 de mayo en Monterrey la pelea en la que el campeón mundial japonés supergallo Toshiaki Nishioka (33-4-3, 20 KO’S) defenderá obligatoriamente su título contra el retador mexicano Jhonny González (40-6-0, 34 KO’S).

El Consejo Mundial de Boxeo está muy orgulloso de la confirmación de la fecha, que es una demostración de la posición que toma nuestro boxeo para mostrar al mundo que México está de pie, estando seguros que el público de Monterrey responderá masivamente a la gran función en la que un mexicano tendrá una gran oportunidad de coronarse.

Fue toda una sorpresa que Nishioka haya aceptado salir de Japón debido al éxito del señor Kuchle de ganar la subasta para este encuentro. Debe reconocérsele como un gran campeón y vendrá a defender caro su título.

Por otro lado a Jhonny González le ha llegado la oportunidad que tanto esperaba.

Ya fue antes campeón mundial de peso gallo y cuando disputó el supergallo a Israel Vázquez perdió por KOT la pelea que iba ganando por decisión de los tres jueces y en la que había derribado a Vázquez en dos ocasiones.

Como un agregado de muchísimo atractivo está la inclusión del ex campeón gallo y supergallo Rafael Márquez quien regresa en busca de la reconquista de este último título, cuyo campeón es precisamente Nishioka, que defiende en la misma función.

El CMB está muy entusiasmado por el regreso del boxeo activo a México precisamente en Monterrey, una de las catedrales del boxeo mexicano de principios del siglo XX.

José Sulaimán indicó que algunos de los más grandes boxeadores mexicanos de la historia han pasado por rings de Monterrey tales como el Ratón Macías, Rubén Olivares, Battling Torres, Kid Azteca, Lauro Salas y Clemente Sánchez.

También en Monterrey tuvieron acción los grandiosos Mantequilla Nápoles, José Medel, Panchito Villa, la gran pelea por el campeonato mundial de peso mosca entre Miguel Canto y el venezolano Betulio González, así como una de las más grandes que el Presidente del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo haya visto jamás en su vida y que fue la que sostuvieron Rafael Herrera y Rodolfo Martínez con un triunfo de Herrera, tras varias caídas de ambos.

Esta será la puesta en pie de México a través del boxeo en la capital norteña de Nuevo León.

NISHIOKA – GONZALEZ CONFIRMED

TO BE HELD ON MAY 23rd, IN MONTERREY.

World Boxing Council President, Jose Sulaiman, informs that today, he spoke on the phone to Mister Reginaldo Kuchle to confirm the WBC title fight to be held on May 23^rd, in Monterrey. Japanese WBC Superbantamweight world champion, Toshiaki Nishioka (33 wins (20 KO´s), 4 losses, 3 draws) will mandatorily defend his title in this bout, when he faces Mexican challenger, Jhonny Gonzalez (40 wins (34 KO´s), 6 losses).

The World Boxing Council is very proud of the confirmation regarding the date, which a demonstration of the position that our boxing is taking to show the world that Mexico is on its feet, being certain that the fans in Monterrey will respond massively to the great card in which a Mexican fighter will have a great opportunity to become world champion.

It was a big surprise that Nishioka accepted to go out of Japan, after Mr. Kuchle successfully won the purse bid for this fight. Nishioka must be given recognition as a great champion, and he is coming to Mexico to defend his title in the toughest way.

On the other hand, the opportunity for Jhonny Gonzalez has come at long last.

Gonzalez is a former Bantamweight world champion, and when he fought Israel Vazquez for the Superbantamweight title, he lost by TKO, the fight that he was winning by decision on the three judges´ scorecards, and the fight in which he had knocked down Vazquez twice.

In addition to the previous facts, and as an amazing attraction, the inclusion of former Bantamweight and Superbantamweight world champion, Rafael Marquez, who is coming back looking to regain the Superbantamweight title, is something very attractive as the current champion is precisely Nishioka who is making a title defense in the same card.

The WBC is very enthusiastic about the coming back of active boxing to Mexico, precisely in Monterrey, one of the cathedrals of Mexican boxing of the early twentieth century.

Jose Sulaiman pointed out that some of the greatest Mexican fighters ever, have been in the rings of Monterrey, such as Raul “Raton” Macias, Ruben Olivares, Battling Torres, Kid Azteca, Lauro Salas, and Clemente Sanchez.

Also in Monterrey, other boxing icons held fights, such as “Mantequilla” Napoles, Jose Medel, Panchito Villa, among others; as well as Monterrey witnessed the great fight for the Flyweight world championship between Miguel Canto (Mexico) and Betulio Gonzalez (Venezuela), and to make it even better, one of the greatest bouts World Boxing Council President has ever seen, the one between Rafael Herrera and Rodolfo Martinez, being the outcome a win for Herrera, after both fighters were knocked down several times.

This will be Mexico´s showing it is on its feet, through boxing in the capital of the Northern State of Nuevo Leon.

GONZALEZ IS GETTING READY

Mexican fighter Jhonny Gonzalez complied with the WBC Regulations, as his thirty-day weigh in was carried out exactly one month prior to the bout. The pre-weigh-in took place at noon, and is valid for the fight in which Gonzalez will fight for the WBC Superbantamweight world championship, this coming May 23^rd, in Monterrey, when he faces the current title holder, Japanese fighter Toshiaki Nishioka.

Gonzalez registered a weight of 59.400 kilograms, although he had the opportunity to weigh 60.781 kilograms, which is the maximum limit in the Superbantamweight division for the 30-day pre-weigh-in. The limit in the division is: 55.338 kilograms.

Seven days before the bout, he will be weighed once again, and the maximum limit will then be 58.600 kilograms, which is not expected to be difficult at all for this young fighter who is very professional and well prepared.

Today, he stepped on the scale even wearing sweat-pants, but wearing nothing on his torso, and as we have said, there was no problem whatsoever. Right after the ceremony, Gonzalez left in order to go on with his training sessions, being his task for today a six-kilometer race.

WBC Historian, Victor Cota, congratulated Jhonny on behalf of WBC President, Jose Sulaiman, as Jhonny showed an excellent weight and that he and his team are working professionally. Mr. Cota wished them the best of luck.

Gonzalez replied by sending his regards to Dr. Sulaiman, and saying he complied with the rule and he was able to show he is really preparing for the bout. Finally he promised he will win the title on May 23^rd, 2009, and therefore there will be a new champion.
