This is the second of a three – part exclusive interview with World Boxing Council president and International Boxing Hall of Fame Member Jose Sulaiman from his executive offices in Mexico City Mexico.
Q: It is obvious HBO and ESPN pay no respect to the WBC or any sanctioning body. How do you feel about this and how do you correct this?
JS: We don’t expect respect from any TV corporation as we have direct boxing relations with them. But i must say that I have always been treated with decency and courtesy by the executives of such TV corporations that I have known.
We expect respect from our promoters, most if not all, who are very good friends and the basis of professional boxing.
ESPN International in Mexico, as well as Fox International have been highly respectful of the WBC, and we always support and help them in whatever they need for for the betterment of their shows.
Those disrespectful TV corporations, if there are any, lose the perspective that they only work with the top of the cream of boxing, which they can not produce. It is the International Boxing Bodies which select boxers every day, in accordance to their records and merits and lead them step by step to the top of the ratings to become challengers, champions, famous and rich; it is here when some of the promoters take boxers away from their architects and take them away to the top of the cream to the big TV corporations, which send everybody else to hell, respecting “so they say”
the law.
But boxing will never die as long as there is hunger in the world.
