The good news is that we’ll have a chance to be together again

WBC World Boxing Cares Goes Aboard the Intrepid Museum

Shout Out To Boxing was a huge success! WBC World Boxing Cares, Athletes for Hope and the NYC Board of Education brought 250 Teens to the Intrepid Museum for an afternoon of inspirational speeches and terrific Boxing Demos. Anyone who thinks that young people are blase about boxing would have rethought their opinion after this. By the end of the two hours, the students were standing on their feet clapping and cheering the athletes.  Some participated in the demos. Everyone hooted and shouted when Tor Hamer (UD HW) called out Jason “Big Six” Estrada (Olympian, UD HW) during the show. It was a fantastic experience, made even better by our NABF President Joe Dwyer, who actually was the boxing champ of the Intrepid in 1959.

WBC World Boxing Cares Goes Onboard the Intrepid

I am exhausted! What amazing energy went into today’s event. What inspirational speeches. The demonstrations were great fun for the kids (and us!). We couldn’t have hoped for a better outcome.
Jose Sulaiman and the WBC thanks each and everyone of you for bringing something special to the stage. Our star, Joe Dwyer, was the connection everyone dreams of having with their venue. So, by the time we got to the rope jumping, mitt hitting and sparring, the kids went wild.

“Today’s event was my favorite so far and I loved the way it all came together by the end of the program. There was so much going on and nothing could have worked out without everyone’s amazing help and spectacular coordination. The entire panel had a wonderful time and I heard great things from the teachers and kids. It’s such a pleasure to work with each and every one of you”

Release:

WBC in conjunction with MK Dons F.C. together with the local Fire Service, Police and Heart FM arranged a Family Fun Day prior to MK Dons vs. Gillingham game. Glenn Catley Former WBC Champion and Jane Couch the UK’s first female Champion took 100′s of boys and girls on the pads in the ring, providing a lot of fun and a taste of the sport.

The Champions including WBC Heavy Weight Champion, ‘Terrible’ Tim Witherpsoon, had photo’s with the fans and signed autographs all afternoon for the Crowd of 12,000+. The Champions were given a rapturous standing ovation when they were presented to the crowd on the pitch at half time. Tim Witherspoon was given the honour of starting the Mascot race which he did in his own inimitable style and flair to the amusement of all.

The day was aimed at encouraging children into sport with and football and boxing working together to inspire them into making positive decisions in there life. Peter Winkleman the Chairman of MK Dons F.C. thanked the WBCares (World Boxing Cares) UK committee members for arranging the most popular entertainment at the fun day. He also thanked the WBC and Jose Sulaiman for making such a great event happen and looks forward to other WBC events. In Particular the Belt Presentation Dinner at the Stadium on 29th November where a whole host of champions will be there to witness Tim and Leon Spinks presented with their Championship belts. Not only will this prestigious event celebrate the achievements of the WBC Champions but will raise much needed funds for WBCares and its partner in the UK HRH Prince Charles’ Princes Trust Charity. Both Charities help disadvantaged youth make the most of there potential and their lives.

Tim Witherspoon said “You don’t always see eye to eye with everyone in boxing when your fighting and things didn’t always happen in my career they way I wanted them to go but I am proud of my achievements. I see with my own eyes the good work the WBC does over here in the UK and it makes me very proud to be one of their Champions and a member of the WBC family. The WBC is truly Global, the real deal. I am really looking forward to being with Leon on November 29th for our Belt Presentation and look forward to seeing the people of Milton Keynes who I know will come out and support such a prestigious event and really get behind the charities to help the young people. Its going to be great to see all the people and all the other Champions on the night. I am happy and in a good place right now and looking to pass on my experience and knowledge to young people, to inspire them to make the most of the lives. My son is an undefeated pro lightweight Terrible Tim II, I am focused on getting him to the top and getting that beautiful Green and Gold WBC belt around his waist when his time is right. Then he knows he’s the Champ just like his Dad, he said with that famous big smile.”

Glenn Catley Former WBC Champion. “What a wonderful day, Jane and I had hundreds of kids in the ring on the pads and they loved every minute of it, none of them have boxed before and they really through themselves into it. We had a great deal of fun as well its great to see young people so happy and I was overwhelmed with the great reception the people of Milton Keynes and MK Dons gave us, I can’t wait for the 29th November now, great people great venue. I am very Proud that Jose Sulaiman through the WBCares program invited me to this event to help the kids. I have spent lots of time supporting different charities but it is very nice indeed to be a part of the WBC team.”

Jane Couch. “I really enjoyed it and can’t thank the WBC and MK Dons enough. I knew Jill Diamond (WBCares President) did loads of good work in the USA, Mexico and other places but no idea that the WBC were so active in the UK. I will definitely start helping the WBC with other projects in the UK. It is vitally important that we encourage girls and boys equally into all sports. It is clear from today that the MK Dons and the WBC feel the same. There were lots of happy faces today a real treat for the kids, days like this make a big difference. I feel we have a responsibility to help the youth and disadvantaged, it was great to two great teams (MK Dons and WBC) make such a direct connection with the local community.

WBcares UK Committee members David Walker, John Murphy and Mick Lowe worked very hard and so did the volunteer boxers from Luton Shamrock Boxing Club. All credit to them and the WBC, a good day all round. wbc-mkdons5

A Shout Out To Boxing

Boxing Day!
On October 22nd, 2009, a group of young and not-so young people from the boxing community will participate in “A Shout Out to Boxing” on the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum. Our hope is to entertain and inspire the 250 NYC Teenagers who’ve been invited. WBC World Boxing Cares, in conjunction with Athletes for Hope and the NYC Board of Education are working together to make this a great day for the kids, and our sport. This is being done as part of the Intrepid’s “Power of One Series: Overcoming Obstacles.” I don’t know anyone in this community who hasn’t climbed a mountain, big or small. We’ve found that sharing our stories can make a difference in a child’s life. The motto of WBC World Boxing Cares is “Big Champions Supporting Little Champions.” Next Thursday, every child in that room will know that with a dream, hard work and a little luck, they all have the potential to be champions at something!

Coaches Appreciation Dinner Huge Success

Contributed by Frank Garza, jr who says “I am still moved by this event.”

by Bob Ryder

The collective history, knowledge and caring of the seven living Detroit area boxing coaches and trainers gathered in one room to be honored by appreciative family, friends and fans made for a special, moving and memorable evening for all in attendance. The theme of service that these men provided, not only to the sport of boxing, but to the needs and hopes of the city’s youth over the many years, repeated itself countless times as each recipient received their just recognition. Some were moved to silence, others to humble thanks. It was long overdue acknowledgement for a special group of men who often are not noticed.

Legendary coaches and trainers Bill Miller, Marty Gilday, Wally Cross, Al “Blue” Lewis, Lawrence Taylor, Floyd Logan and Dave Shoulders all were present and honored. Deceased greats Walter Smith and John Brown also received special tribute. The UAW Local 140 Hall in Warren was nearly full of their supporters. Former Detroit area boxers Hedgemon Lewis, Tom “Boom Boom” Johnson, Al “Tiger Cat” Jones, David Braxton, Derrick Jefferson, and Anthony Jones were in attendance to show their appreciation to many of the men who guided them in their journey through the pro ranks. Detroit Councilwoman Brenda Jones and Congressman John Conyers were present to provide their well wishes as well.
Longtime boxing coaches with more than 300 years of training experience were honored in Warren on Saturday. (From left to right) Miller, Shoulders, Cross, Taylor, Gilday, Logan and Lewis. Photo: Bob Ryder

The real stars of the night however, were the honorees. The extraordinary deeds of each were detailed by emcee Frank Garza and presenters Sue Worander, James Jackson, Rene Muniz and Jeanntte Gordon. Bill Miller spoke quietly of how he has seen them all, going as far back as Jack Johnson! His work with such fighters as James Toney, Lindell Holmes, Davey Moore, Bronco McKart and so many others over his 64 years of training makes one wonder if we will soon see his kind again. Marty Gilday has probably gloved at least once, every amateur boxer that has ever fought in the Detroit area. Floyd Logan has coached at Kronk for many years. Former heavyweight contender “Blue” Lewis fought Muhammad Ali as a pro and after his active boxing career ended has been training and coaching for the Parks and Recreation Department. “Peanut” Taylor has trained fighters for over 30 years and Wally Cross for over 20. Dave Shoulders as a young pro promised his mother he would give it up if ever knocked out. After he was knocked out by Joe Sheldon, he kept his word but thankfully stayed in the sport all these years as a dedicated coach, mentor, and trainer to many kids. As part of the evening’s festivities Dave was presented with a championship belt in recognition of his “champion” status as well as what might have been had he continued his pro career.

Brothers Michael and Manson Halliburton organized and put on this event. They are to be commended also. They did a tremendous job and announced to the gathering that this was the beginning of what is expected to be an annual happening. I hope they will succeed in their efforts. Anyone who is in boxing or loves the sport should watch for the next one and make plans to attend. If this inaugural dinner was any indication, it will be an event they will long remember.

Here’s a touching note from Kiate Sirigul, whom, along with General Kovid, keeps the wonderful WBC Cares program alive in Thailand.
Dearest Jill,
I hope this mail find you well and stay healthy, Veerapol Sahaprom, WBC former Bantamweight Champion is accompanying with Kiate Sirigul and his family scheduled to visit Ban Kru Noi (Kru Noi’s Home). Kru Noi welcomed all the visitor with all the her children about 67 kids aged 3 to 16 years old, Veerapol is very impressive with all the children who tried to get closer to him and some tried to touch his championship belt with admiration and inspiration of the tough fighter. He is very friendly to all the kids and showed them love and cares with good thought and conversation,  even though some of those kids are too exciting with his presence.
Kiate has donated some money for Lunch project through Kru Noi and welcome her as one of our honorable member for World Boxing Cares project to keep helping the children with World Boxing Cares Certificate.
In the attached file you would see another file of picture which I present World Boxing Cares Certificate to invite Mr. Yingsuriya Palusuk, Governor of Phang Nga Province as the honorable member for our project to support our champions to inspire the kids to keep on fighting for their better life. On the same event Gen Kovid also donated his own money at the amounting of 10000 Baht to support the charity in Phang Nga area through Mr. Yingsuriya Palusuk, governor of Phana Nga provice. This province is the same province which was badly damaged by Tidal wave “Tsunami”.
