Bernardo Pilatti of ESPN sports, in his new video podcast, talked about the year 2010 as the worst year in history of boxing, but argued that the bout to be hold by Sergio ‘Maravilla’ Martinez from Argentina and Paul Williams from USA this coming November 20, could save it, because it is the kind of fight that people want to see, one that really create interest in boxing.
From our point of view, we have to say it´s not truth, because this year, at least in Mexico, has been very important; Mexico perform world championship fights almost every weekend, the Mexican boxing is the king in several divisional categories and the number of active fighters in our country who compete at the highest level, is remarkable.
However, for the United States itself has been a bad year. From this perspective, we accept the assertion that Pilatti makes. Because if we see the prospects they usually tend to inflate, are falling one by one.
Just look at the figures that gave a face to the series Boxing After Dark from HBO, all have fallen on hard times, and just the marketing giants like Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather are the only justification for the other series called ‘Championship Boxing’. What’s more, I believe that neither they, because their functions are transmitted via Pay Per View (PPV) and always are a fraud.
Chris Arreola is one of the best exponents of the heavyweight category, however, the few of figures, coupled with the dominance of the Klitschko brothers, has wiped out any chance for someone born in America highlighted in the heavy weight category that traditionally had been dominated by American fighters.
But do not lose hope dear friends because ESPN is broadcasting functions from Mexico. They did a couple of weeks ago and they really did it very well.
2010 is not a bad year for boxing, is a bad year for the big corporations of the United States. We think it is time for fans to realize that the U.S. boxers are not all the boxers in the world.
