JAPAN HAS 10 OPBF CHAMPS OUT OF 17 WEIGH CLASSES
By REY DANSECO
Japan has dominated the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) with most number of champions.
In its latest rankings that released yesterday, there are 10 Japanese champions in 17 weight classes.
The Philippines, Thailand and Australia have one champion each while there are four vacant thrones that are up for grab.
Other regional boxing organizations in the region modelled the OPBF in formation of their groups, making it the most respected and prestigious in the world.
OPBF was formed in 1954 by Filipino, Japanese, and Korean boxing commissions. It was originally called Orient Boxing Federation but changed to OPBF when the Australian National Boxing Federation joined in 1977.
Aside from the countries mentioned, the other OPBF members are Fiji, Guam, Hawaii, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Mongolia, New Zealand, PAMA, Republic of China, Samoa, Taiwan, Thailand and Tonga.
Headed by Justiniano Montano of the Philippines, the OPBF was one of the founding organizations that formed the World Boxing Council in 1963 and is currently affiliated with that organization.
The current Japanese champions of OPBF are Kosei Tanaka (minimumweight), Koki Eto (flyweight), Ryosuke Iwasa (bantamweight), Shingo Wake (super bantamweight), Hisashi Amagasa (featherweight), Masayoshi Nakatani (lightweight), Keita Obara (super lightweight), Yoshihiro Kamegai (welterweight), Akio Shibata (middleweight), and Yuzo Kiyota (super middleweight).
Light flyweight Jonathan Taconing of the Philippines, super featherweight Jomthong Chuwattana of Thailand, and cruiserweight Anthony McCracken of Australia are the other champions.
On Dec. 18 in Tokyo, top ranked Dennis Laurente of the Philippines and Tadashi Yuba fight for the vacant light middleweight title followed by the clash between Ryo Matsumoto of Japan and Rusalee Samor of Indonesia for the vacant super flyweight title on Dec. 30 also in the Japanese capital.
Lightheavyweight and heavyweight are also vacant.
OPBF champions get an automatic slot in WBC world rankings, main reason why it attracts promoters and managers to vie their boxers into.
In November ratings of WBC, Kamegai and Obara are rated No. 14, Nakatani at 13th, Chuwattana in No. 12, Amagasa and Taconing at 5th, Wake (3), Iwasa (2), Eto (15), and Tanaka (10).
Kiyota (33) and Shibata (23) are expected to move up in the incoming world rankings while McCracken is expected to replace former champion David Aloua of New Zealand/Australia at least in No. 33.
OPBF offices is based in Tokyo and headed by Japan Boxing Commissioner Yewkow Hayashi, former president and the current vice president Frank Quill and executive secretary Ken Morita.
Other respected boxing groups that composes the WBC are North American Boxing Federation (NABF), European Boxing Union (EBU), Asian Boxing Council (ABCO)
African Boxing Union (ABU), Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE), Central American Boxing Federation (FECARBOX), CIS and Slovenian Boxing Bureau (CISBB), and South American Boxing Federation (FESUBOX).
